Derek J. Schaffner Quoted in CIO Dive Article

We are delighted to report that partner Derek Schaffner was quoted in a CIO Dive article about how corporate changes at OpenAI will Affect CIOs.

The CIO Dive article addressed why technology decision-makers should pay close attention to OpenAI’s formation of the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation and the for-profit OpenAI Group.

The reporter turned to Conn Kavanaugh Technology Transactions partner Derek J. Schaffner for his perspective.

The October 29, 2025 story entitled “How Corporate Changes at OpenAI will affect CIOs” noted that OpenAI has expanded its capacity to secure funding, making it possible that some of those resources will be directed toward building enterprise-grade safeguards for its models and tools.

Schaffner said, “Increased access to funding may enhance product stability and innovation, giving enterprises greater confidence in long-term investments in OpenAI technologies.”

He added, “As OpenAI now prioritizes shareholder returns, enterprises must remain vigilant. Cost-cutting measures, particularly around privacy and data security, could emerge as OpenAI seeks to maximize profitability.”

Schaffner, who is accredited as a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and worked in senior management positions at Microsoft, Xerox, and Accenture prior to practicing law, represents clients in financial services, consumer products, manufacturing, hospitality, health care, energy, mining, and space. He focuses his transactions practice on artificial intelligence, large language models, cloud computing, SaaS, privacy and data security, information technology, software development, systems implementation, business process transactions, integrated facilities management, third party logistics, and licensing. He can be reached at dschaffner@connkavanaugh.com.
