Conn Kavanaugh Welcomes New Partner Marie Chafe to Lead Firm’s Product Liability Practice

Conn Kavanaugh is pleased to welcome Marie E. Chafe to the firm.

On June 1, 2021, Marie E. Chafe joined Conn Kavanaugh LLP as a partner to expand and lead the firm’s product liability practice group.

In 30 years of trial experience, Marie has defended and tried a wide array of product liability matters involving automotive products, medical devices, child products, asbestos, general transportation, construction, toxic exposure, recreational products, household products, and power tools. She advises general counsel, national counsel, and insurers to develop strategies for discovery and overall litigation that are cost-effective and drive the results clients seek. She received the AV Preeminent rating from Martindale Hubbell, and has been named a Massachusetts Super Lawyer by the publishers of Boston Magazine starting in 2006.

Marie has served on the faculty of numerous continuing legal education programs, lecturing nationally for the Defense Research Institute (DRI), the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC), Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education – New England, the American Conference Institute, and for internal corporate training programs. She regularly researches and writes in national publications on issues related to litigation.

“Conn Kavanaugh is thrilled to have Marie Chafe join the firm,” remarked Tom Gallitano, the firm’s Managing Partner, “especially given Marie’s stellar track record in achieving favorable outcomes over many years. To that, Marie adds a passion for giving back to our profession by being actively involved and holding leadership positions in a variety of national professional organizations, and is equally committed to providing professional opportunities to the next generation of legal talent – all of which we value and applaud.”

“Joining the Conn Kavanaugh team provides a valuable opportunity for me to grow and develop the firm’s product liability, business litigation and insurance practices,” said Marie. “Moreover, my clients will benefit from the collaborative approach Conn Kavanaugh takes to handling the multiple needs of corporate clients. Over the years, I have admired the breadth of experience and knowledge of Conn Kavanaugh’s attorneys, and now look forward to expanding the firm’s reach. I am especially excited about Conn Kavanaugh’s focus on advancing attorneys from diverse backgrounds–including women–which aligns with a commitment that I have in my career. This may be in my genes as my grandmother and namesake Marie E. Jessen was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1926.

Conn Kavanaugh’s strong track record and prioritization of attracting, retaining, and advancing women and diverse attorneys has significantly benefited the firm and its clients.

-Marie E. Chafe

Marie’s scientific background helps her develop a deep understanding of the products that are the subject of litigation, and enables her to pursue creative approaches to defend her clients’ interests. Before joining Conn Kavanaugh, Marie was a partner at Cornell & Gollub.

Outside the office, Marie is a leader of many legal industry associations such as DRI-Voice of the Defense Bar, the Massachusetts Defense Lawyers Association, the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC), and the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC). Marie is current President of the Mass. Defense Lawyers Association and Chair of DRI’s Women in the Law Committee.

Marie received her law degree from The George Washington University National Law School and her undergraduate degree from Colby College, receiving the Paul Perez prize for meritorious achievement.
